German director Isabelle Stever's latest film doesn't deal so much with taboos, but outdoes them altogether. Grand Jeté is an accusatory portrait of the sexual relationship between an elderly woman and a young man. But the woman, Nadja (Sarah Nevada Grether), is his mother; man, Mario (Emil von Schönfels), is the estranged son she gave to her biological mother as a child to pursue a career as a ballerina. Stever's intellectually rigorous approach takes a dispassionate view of mother-son incest - unusually, neither being punished for their transgressions; They are also not publicly judged. Instead, the film coldly examines the dynamics behind their affair and uncovers, if not a healthy relationship, the nucleus of dysfunctional logic. It's a daring and troubling film that, one suspects, may present some sort of marketing challenge. Distributors looking for topics that push boundaries and polarize, In order to concentrate on her career, a ballet teacher lives estranged from her young son, who grew up with her mother.
