Set in the mid-19th century, the film tells the story of Ada McGrath, a mute woman who is sent to New Zealand with her young daughter and beloved piano for an arranged marriage to a wealthy farmer, Alisdair Stewart. Ada is deeply attached to her piano and uses it as her primary means of communication. When Alisdair's farmhand, George Baines, discovers Ada's piano, he becomes infatuated with her and offers to trade her piano for a series of intimate lessons. In the mid-19th century a mute woman is sent to New Zealand along with her young daughter and prized piano for an arranged marriage to a farmer, but is soon lusted after by a farm worker.
